MEDALS AND TOOLS

The MahN has a major collection of medals and tools used to manufacture them, including several thousand items. Various medals featuring subjects related to Neuchâtel are completed by collections given by medal artists from Neuchâtel, combining their finished work with preliminary drawings.

The MahN also holds a uniquely valuable local industrial heritage from two medal manufacturing companies: the Huguenins of Le Locle and Paul Kramer of Neuchâtel. This collection includes copper and resin models, punches and dies as well as a screw press and a reducing machine: it sheds light on medal production methods between the late 19th and early 21st centuries. Order books and catalogues of products, reference collections of medals and various archives in paper and photographic form make it possible to trace the history of these two world-renowned Neuchâtel enterprises, and to document the revival of the medallist's art which they helped to foster.
