For its first special exhibition, the Museum of Art and History is inviting photographer Christian Lutz. In an approach that blends documentary aesthetics with contemplation, the artist examines the dysfunctions of the world while at the same time distancing himself from traditional reportage images.
In 2025, the Museum of Art and History will be inaugurating a new type of temporary exhibition, the dossier exhibition. Reduced in size, this format will highlight various aspects of the institution's rich collections, rediscovered as the collections are relocated, new acquisitions are made and contemporary works are created.
Born in Geneva in 1973, Christian Lutz trained at the artistic establishment ‘le 75’ in Brussels. Between 2003 and 2012, he produced a trilogy on the theme of power: political with Protokoll, economic with Tropical Gift and religious with In Jesus'Name. The three parts have each been the subject of a book published by Lars Müller, and the trilogy has been exhibited on numerous occasions. Insert Coins was published by André Frère in 2016, and The Pearl River by Patrick Frey in 2019. These two series, which deal with the world of gambling in Las Vegas and Macao, were presented under the title Eldorado at the Rencontres internationales de la photographie d'Arles in 2019. In 2021, Christian Lutz published Citizens with Patrick Frey. This work is the result of several years' travelling in populist-influenced European territories. The photographer's approach is based on scrupulous observation of the dynamics of our society.
